Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for Books with Wheels service?
Residents of East Greenbush and Schodack who are temporarily or permanently unable to visit the library in person are eligible.

How does the service work?
Once we have received your application, we will schedule your first delivery. A Books with Wheels volunteer will bring you a tote bag of 5-8 large print books that match your reading preferences. We will arrange a mutually convenient date and time – approximately a month later – to collect your completed bag and deliver another.

May I request certain books or authors?
We cannot guarantee the availability of specific titles or authors, but we will gladly accommodate requests whenever possible.

Is there a delivery fee?
No, Books with Wheels is offered free of charge.

How can I receive other types of materials?
The New York State Library loans audiobooks and magazines to eligible individuals through the Talking Book and Braille Library program. We would be happy to assist you in applying for access to this free program. For more information, call the Talking Book and Braille Library at 518-474-5935.

May I borrow DVDs?
Because DVDs have a shorter loan period than other items in the collection, we cannot include them in the Books with Wheels program.

What if I do not have a library card?
You can apply online or we will mail a library card application to you. The application must be filled out and returned to the delivery volunteer at your first scheduled delivery. You will also need to show the delivery volunteer your driver’s license or other picture ID and a utility bill or other document indicating proof of address. We will deliver your new library card at the next delivery time.

Drive-Thru Book Drop

All materials, excluding “Stories to Go” kits, may be returned in the drive-thru book drop 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To pick up materials at the book drop during open hours, please call the library at least 20 minutes ahead.

Exhibit Spaces

Exhibit spaces can be reserved by local artists and organizations. More info

Residents may request materials that are not owned by the Upper Hudson Library System. More info

Meeting Rooms

The library has meeting rooms that can be reserved for public use.  See the full policy or reserve a room.

Notary

A notary is available during some of the hours the library is open. Please call ahead to ensure availability.

Resources for Blind and Low Vision Patrons

Large print books and audiobooks are available for those who find conventional print too small to read easily. Low-vision equipment is also available for magnification of print materials. Inquire at the Reference Desk.

The New York State Library’s Talking Book and Braille Library is a free service for eligible residents of upstate New York who are unable to use standard print materials due to a visual or physical disability.  Materials are mailed to and from library patrons at their home at no charge.  Eligible residents must fill out an application (http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/tbbl/apply.htm) and have it certified by a medical professional or a librarian.

Education

Book a Librarian

In addition to occasional computer classes, we offer 1:1 appointments to East Greenbush/Schodack resident cardholders. Schedule a 30 or 60 minute appointment with a librarian for assistance or training. More info

The library hosts programs for job seekers including resume building and interview skills, as well as provides access to print and online resources. More info

English for Speakers of Other Languages

An English for Speakers of Other Languages course is offered by Questar III BOCES here in the library. For Summer 2016, classes begin on Wednesday, July 13 and are held Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9:00-12:00. Museum Passes

Various museum passes are available to check out, up to 3 days, to nearby museums. Passes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and non-requestable. Available to East Greenbush/Schodack residents and current Friends of the East Greenbush Library onlyMore info

Voter Registration and Election Information

Registration and Absentee Ballot Applications & other voting information are available in the library. General election information: eVoters Guide is available at: www.lwvrc.org by the League of Women Voters of Rensselaer County.

Technology

ChargeTech Charging Stations

The library has three ChargeTech device charging stations in the library. One is located in the seating area next to the music in the main library, another is in the Teen Area, and the third is the Parenting section/playroom. The devices have attached cords for most types of devices. They also have USB and standard electrical inputs if you have your own cord or want to plug in a laptop, camera, or other device. Please do not leave your device unattended while it is charging.

Computers

The library maintains public computers for patron use. Each patron is entitled to 2.5 hours of computer use per day. Guest passes are available for non-cardholders with picture ID. A guest pass is good for 30 minutes of computer time is a single day.  Users must abide by the library’s Internet Use Policy.

Library Computer Configuration

Adult Area – 12 public internet computers (Windows 10)
Children’s Area – 3 public internet computers (Windows 10), 2 non-internet game stations (AWE).
8 Laptops (Windows 10)

All library computers include Microsoft Office 2019 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher), Adobe Reader, VLC Media Player, 7-Zip, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome. Computer access is managed by PC Reservation and printing is managed by LPT:One. Floppy drives are available for checkout at the Reference Desk. Library Computer Security

For your security, a document may be saved temporarily to the computer/laptop, but will be automatically wiped when the session is over. You may email a document to yourself or a flash drive to save it more permanently. Antivirus is installed, and it may interfere with access to some websites. Programs may not be installed on library computers, and CD burning is disabled.

Color Copier/Scanner

A self-service photocopier is available for public use, located next to the Reference Desk. The charge is $.15 per side for black & white copies and $.50 per side for color copies (cash only). Duplexing (double-sided copies) is available for both color and B&W. The copier also has the ability to scan color or black & white to an email account. There is no charge to scan documents.

Fax Service

Please note:
Our public fax machine is currently unavailable while the building is closed, faxing can be done by special request.  The cost is $0.99 for the first page and $.49 each additional page.

Free Wi-Fi

Anyone with a wireless device is welcome to use our wireless network, provided they agree to our Internet Policy. There is no time limit for usage. Please use discretion when using the library’s wireless network, as it is unsecured. Headphones must be used with wireless devices, and they are available for checkout at the Reference Desk or purchase at the Circulation Desk. Wireless printing is also available.

To connect, search for a wireless network named “EG Public WiFi.” Once connected, open your internet browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.) if it does not open automatically. Instead of seeing your usual homepage, you will be redirected to our wireless portal. Click to agree to our Wireless Network Access Policy, and you will be forwarded to your homepage. If you receive an error, try manually entering a page (such as uhls.org) directly into the browser’s address bar and press enter. This should prompt the wireless server to redirect you to our portal where you can agree to our wireless network policy and gain access.

Mobile Hotspots

The East Greenbush Community Library provides mobile hotspots for checkout to patrons for use with their personal wireless devices.  A mobile hotspot is a small, portable device you can use to connect a wireless enabled device, such as a laptop, smartphone, or tablet to the Internet.  Our hotspots have unlimited 4G LTE data plans.  Users are subject to the library’s Internet Use Policy where applicable. This service is being offered in response to the limited internet availability at the library due to the pandemic and may only be available for a limited time. More info

Laptop Lending (COVID-19 Temporary)

The East Greenbush Community Library provides laptops for checkout to patrons. Borrowers are subject to the library’s Internet Use Policy where applicable. This policy temporarily supersedes our existing laptop lending policy due to library capacity restrictions during the pandemic.  Policy

COVID-19 Laptop Lending Procedures

  • Laptops are available for East Greenbush/Schodack resident (Adult) cardholders with accounts in good standing. Eligible cardholders do not include Online, MyCard, UHLS, or other library card-holders
  • One laptop can be checked out per household during the 3-day loan period
  • Upon timely returning a laptop that has been checked out, a borrower must wait at least 48 hours before checking out a laptop again

Borrowing a Laptop

  • Laptops are available on a first-come first-served basis and are not requestable through the online catalog.  Borrower may call to reserve a laptop for same-day pickup or check one out from the circulation desk.
  • Laptops can be checked out for a maximum of three (3) days and are not renewable.
  • Borrower must present a library card or government-issued ID at checkout.
  • Borrower must complete a loan agreement form at the time of pickup.

Returns

  • Laptop kits must be returned to the East Greenbush Community Library only.
  • Laptop kits are not to be returned in the book drop nor the book return bins.
  • If the building is open, laptops should be returned to a staff member at the Welcome Desk. If Library service level is at curbside service only, patron will go to the drive-thru during library pickup hours (posted on the library website) and request a staff member to report to the front door for a safe return.
  • Laptops must be powered off before returning.

Patron Responsibilities

  • Once a laptop is checked out to a patron, it becomes the responsibility of that patron. Any changes in condition or content while in the patron’s care will be the patron’s responsibility. The patron is responsible for damage, loss, or theft.
  • If any technical problems are encountered, patrons should return the device immediately to an East Greenbush Community Library staff member
  • The borrower is responsible for knowing how to use the internet applications they choose to use.
  • The user will not tamper with the laptop (hardware or software), or attempt to open, repair, or modify the laptop in any way. Such activity will be considered damage by the patron and will be treated accordingly.
  • Misuse of the computer or non-compliance with library procedures and policies, or illegal conduct while using a laptop, will result in the loss of laptop borrowing privileges.
  • Parents and guardians, i.e., the borrower, are responsible for monitoring their child’s use of the Internet on a library laptop. Any restriction of a child’s access to the internet is the responsibility of the borrower.
  • Laptops must be returned before closing time on the due date.
  • Laptops will remain checked out on the borrower’s card for the duration of the quarantine period (4 days). Any fines which accrue during this period will be waived during the check-in process.
  • An overdue charge of $5.00 per day up to the full replacement cost will be charged for a laptop that is not returned.  If the laptop has been returned and fines ave accrued *during quarantine* that prevent you from performing library functions, call the circulation desk to have the fines waived.
  • Patrons are responsible for replacement costs if the laptop or any parts are lost, stolen, damaged, or not returned.
  • If the laptop is not returned at the end of the 3-day loan period, it will be locked remotely, i.e., it will be rendered unusable by the borrower
  • The local law enforcement authorities may be alerted that library property is missing/stolen if the laptop kit is not returned when due.

Library Responsibilities

  • The library is not responsible for any liability, damages, or expense resulting from the use or misuse of the laptop nor is the library responsible for data loss resulting from the borrower’s use of the device
  • Borrower privacy is protected and respected. The library will not monitor or track the websites that a user visits nor the information that a user enters and/or submits online (e.g., usernames, passwords, credit card information, etc.).

 

 

Printing

Printing costs 15¢ per page for single-sided black & white, 30¢ per page for double-sided black & white and 50¢ per page for color. Wireless printing is also available in or to the library from any location, using any device. More info
