POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Assistant Library Director – Public Services is a forward-thinking leader who drives innovation and excellence across all public-facing services—including programming, outreach, borrower services, and support for patrons of all ages. Reporting directly to the Library Director, this role champions outstanding user experiences and equitable access, while building meaningful connections with the community. The Assistant Director is also a key contributor to strategic planning and steps in as Acting Director when needed to ensure seamless operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Supervise department heads in public service areas.
• Develop, evaluate, and improve programs and services.
• Track and analyze public service statistics and patron feedback to guide continuous
improvement.
• Draft public service policy proposals.
• Promote inclusive and accessible library services that reflect the diversity of the community.
• Partner with community organizations to strengthen programming and outreach efforts.
• Manage public service operations, spaces, and staffing levels for optimal efficiency and patron
experience.
• Provide high-level customer service and resolve escalated patron concerns.
• Support budgeting and grant efforts.
• Represent the library at events and serve as Acting Director in the Library Director’s absence.

COMPENSATION: $70,500-$88,125 (step schedule range, based on experience)

ASSIGNMENT: 37.5 hours/week; some evenings/weekends required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• MLS from an ALA-accredited library school.
• NYS Public Library Professional Certificate.
• 5+ years in public library services.
• 3+ years of supervisory experience.

Library Card Registration Free to any individual who resides or pays taxes in the East Greenbush Community Library taxing district or Town of Schodack. Cards expire and must be renewed every three years.

Free to any individual who volunteers or works at the EGRN Library. Cards expire and must be renewed yearly.

Free to partner educational agencies with verified employment. Cards expire and must be renewed yearly.

Those that live outside the UHLS area may purchase a temporary card at the price established by our Table of Fines and Fees. Cards expire and must be renewed yearly.

All ages eligible. Youth under age 16 must have their application completed and signed by a parent or guardian, who provides acceptable identification for them.

Card blocked at $5 or more in replacement costs or fines/fees

The UHLS MyCard is a fine-free, limited-access library card for youth. It is intended to address multiple barriers to serving youth and families, including:

  • Barriers to access related to fines (e.g. computer access, checking out materials)
  • Parents not present for a child’s library card registration
  • Previous fines on a child’s card

Free for youth residing in a community served by a UHLS library.Applicants 18 and under who are applying for a limited use, UHLS Youth Only MyCard, need to provide name, address, and date of birth.UHLS library cards expire and must be renewed every three years.Youth ages birth to 18 can register unaccompanied, or with the help of a caregiver or relative who is not the child’s parent/guardian.This card may be used at all UHLS Libraries except for the Colonie Town Library.
