Position Overview:
The East Greenbush Community Library is currently accepting applications for a full-time Library Assistant to join our dynamic and dedicated Youth & Family Services team. If you have a passion for working with young children – especially preschoolers – and love creating joyful, engaging experiences for families, this could be the perfect opportunity for you. This position supports the daily operations of the Children’s and Teen Rooms, with a focus on providing exceptional service to children, caregivers, and educators. The Library Assistant collaborates with Youth Services Librarians on early literacy initiatives, collection maintenance, and the planning and delivery of programs for children, teens, and families. Creativity, warmth, and a love for early learners are essential!

Key Responsibilities:
• Assisting patrons in the use of the library’s collections and services.
• Maintaining a comfortable library atmosphere for children, young adults, and families.
• Staffing the Youth Services Department, as assigned.
• Helping to maintain collections.
• Helping to plan, implement, and assist with programming held both in the library and at outreach locations.
• Planning and creating displays of materials.
• Keeping statistics for department reports.
• Helping to organize the service desk, storage closets, and work areas.
• Assisting in the development and implementation of the Summer Reading Program.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a bachelor’s degree; or
• Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an associate’s degree and two (2) years of library experience
• Experience working with children and teens.

Compensation: $21.02-$26.28 per/hour (step schedule range, based on experience).

Assignment: 37.5 hours/week; includes some evenings during the week and participation in a weekend rotation.

Library Card Registration Free to any individual who resides or pays taxes in the East Greenbush Community Library taxing district or Town of Schodack. Cards expire and must be renewed every three years.

Free to any individual who volunteers or works at the EGRN Library. Cards expire and must be renewed yearly.

Free to partner educational agencies with verified employment. Cards expire and must be renewed yearly.

Those that live outside the UHLS area may purchase a temporary card at the price established by our Table of Fines and Fees. Cards expire and must be renewed yearly.

All ages eligible. Youth under age 16 must have their application completed and signed by a parent or guardian, who provides acceptable identification for them.

Card blocked at $5 or more in replacement costs or fines/fees

The UHLS MyCard is a fine-free, limited-access library card for youth. It is intended to address multiple barriers to serving youth and families, including:

  • Barriers to access related to fines (e.g. computer access, checking out materials)
  • Parents not present for a child’s library card registration
  • Previous fines on a child’s card

Free for youth residing in a community served by a UHLS library.Applicants 18 and under who are applying for a limited use, UHLS Youth Only MyCard, need to provide name, address, and date of birth.UHLS library cards expire and must be renewed every three years.Youth ages birth to 18 can register unaccompanied, or with the help of a caregiver or relative who is not the child’s parent/guardian.This card may be used at all UHLS Libraries except for the Colonie Town Library.

Card blocked at $10 or more in replacement costs.
