The East Greenbush Community Library would like to clarify its role in recent discussions regarding the possibility of a new police station on Library property.
In June 2025, after learning that the Town was exploring sites for a new police station, the Library Director initiated a conversation with Town and Police officials to better understand the Town’s needs and explore potential opportunities for collaboration. In the spirit of partnership, Library officials and Town and Police officials discussed the possibility of locating a new police station on a portion of Library property, as well as the idea of the Town obtaining ownership of Community Way, over the course of several months.
The Library also raised other conceptual ideas, such as relocating Town Hall or developing a new Teen Center. The Town indicated these were not options and remained focused on the police station.
These conversations were exploratory only. No written offers were exchanged, no definitive plans were developed, and the Library Board of Trustees never took an official position or vote on the matter. Any characterization suggesting otherwise is inaccurate.
Should the Town at any point provide a formal proposal, the Library Board is committed to a thorough and transparent evaluation process, guided by the Library’s mission, fiduciary responsibilities, and the best interests of the community. The Board remains committed to open communication, factual accuracy, and public engagement on matters affecting the community.
A Town Board public hearing is scheduled for November 12. We encourage all residents to attend and ensure their voices are heard.
