PDF: Library Clerk (Part-Time)

POSITION OVERVIEW

Patience, adaptability, and attention to detail are essential, as you’ll perform various tasks in a fast-paced environment while maintaining professionalism.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for all patrons as they enter the library, ensuring they feel valued.
  • Engage with visitors of all ages and backgrounds, assisting them in navigating library resources and services.
  • Support patrons by checking materials in and out, registering new library cardholders, and answering inquiries about library offerings.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and patrons in-person and digitally to ensure smooth operations and collaboration.
  • Welcome community groups using the library’s meeting rooms, providing guidance on available resources.
  • Approach interactions with empathy, particularly when assisting patrons facing challenges.
  • Perform additional duties as required, including but not limited to registering patrons for programs, recommending books and more.

COMPENSATION: Hourly rate: $15.07-$18.84 (step schedule, based on experience)

WORK SCHEDULE: 15-20 hours per week, with a flexible schedule, including weekend rotations.

LOCATION: East Greenbush Community Library, East Greenbush NY

REPORTS TO: Head of Borrower Services

 

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS: This is a civil service position and appointments are provisional. The successful candidate must take an exam when it is available. Applications may be obtained in person at the library or online. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Strong customer service skills; previous experience in a library, or the hospitality industry preferred.
  • Basic computer and internet proficiency with a willingness to learn new technologies and library software.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a friendly, approachable demeanor.
  • Ability to engage positively with patrons and collaborate effectively as part of our library team.
  • Proficiency in using a cash register and credit card machine for accurate transactions.
  • Ability to alphabetize quickly and accurately.
  • Punctuality and consistent attendance are essential.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally and to push full book carts frequently.
  • Some stooping, bending, and use of step stools required.

Library Card Registration Free to any individual who resides or pays taxes in the East Greenbush Community Library taxing district or Town of Schodack. Cards expire and must be renewed every three years.

Free to any individual who volunteers or works at the EGRN Library. Cards expire and must be renewed yearly.

Free to partner educational agencies with verified employment. Cards expire and must be renewed yearly.

Those that live outside the UHLS area may purchase a temporary card at the price established by our Table of Fines and Fees. Cards expire and must be renewed yearly.

All ages eligible. Youth under age 16 must have their application completed and signed by a parent or guardian, who provides acceptable identification for them.

Card blocked at $5 or more in replacement costs or fines/fees

Fines vary according to individual library rules and UHLS resource sharing rules. The EGRN Table of Fines and Fees are applicable for items which are checked out from the East Greenbush Community Library

The UHLS MyCard is a fine-free, limited-access library card for youth. It is intended to address multiple barriers to serving youth and families, including:

  • Barriers to access related to fines (e.g. computer access, checking out materials)
  • Parents not present for a child’s library card registration
  • Previous fines on a child’s card

Free for youth residing in a community served by a UHLS library.Applicants 18 and under who are applying for a limited use, UHLS Youth Only MyCard, need to provide name, address, and date of birth.UHLS library cards expire and must be renewed every three years.Youth ages birth to 18 can register unaccompanied, or with the help of a caregiver or relative who is not the child’s parent/guardian.This card may be used at all UHLS Libraries except for the Colonie Town Library.
