Construction Project Updates
Construction Project Overview

Interior Renovation Work Begins Monday, April 13
Interior renovation work is now scheduled to begin on Monday, April 13.
This work is needed following water damage caused by the ice storm in late December. Using insurance proceeds, the Library will complete repairs and renovations in several areas of the building, including carpet replacement in the Main Library, Teen Room, Hurr Room, Children’s Room, and office areas.
Although the carpet in the Children’s Room was salvageable, it had already been scheduled for replacement next year. Because other work in that area was already expected to cause disruption, the Library expanded the project to replace the Children’s Room carpet at the same time. Completing the work together is more cost-effective and uses funds already set aside in the 2026 budget for capital repairs.
The Library will remain open during the project, but visitors should expect temporary service disruptions, rotating area closures, reduced seating, and occasional noise and dust.
For the latest project details, weekly service impacts, and area closures, please visit our Construction Project Updates section.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we complete these needed improvements.
Service Update
Due to storm-related water damage caused by ice damming on the roof, remediation work is currently underway in parts of the library. While the building remains open, some public computers are temporarily unavailable, and portions of several collections are only accessible with staff assistance, or have been relocated to allow for access.
We appreciate your patience as we complete repairs and work to restore full access as quickly as possible. Please see a staff member if you need help locating materials or using library services. Thank you for your patience!

CD Collection Goes Digital

In our commitment to staying current we are embarking on a new journey. After much consideration and feedback from our patrons, we have decided to transition our music collection from physical CDs to an entirely digital format, effective April 11, 2024.
What does this mean for you? It means easier access to music, available anytime, anywhere. Say goodbye to the limitations of physical inventory and hello to the endless possibilities of digital music collections.
Why are CDs going away?
Declining usage rates
- Significant decline in music CD circulation. Statistics from 2015 to 2023 show a 75% decrease in CD circulation, contrasting with the rise in digital usage.
- Music CD lending dropped from 6% to less than 1% of total circulation during this same period.
Financial considerations
- Importance of allocating resources effectively within our budget constraints.
- Discontinuing the purchase of physical CDs in 2022 allowed the library to focus funds on digital music access, which better aligns with community preferences.
Efficiency and Staff Resources
- Time and resources required to manage physical collections, particularly with the coexistence of physical and digital formats.
- Streamlining the collection to digital formats will allow librarians to concentrate efforts on improving digital music accessibility.
Fading Technology
- Increasing obsolescence of CDs, evident in the decline of CD players in newer vehicles and the reduced presence of CDs in retail stores.
Durability Issues
- Frequent problems of CDs becoming damaged over time, leading to borrower disappointment when they are unplayable.
What will the library do with the CDs?
The CD collection will be available to the community for FREE at the Friends April Book & Media sale happening on April 12 – 14, 2024 in the library. Any remaining CDs after the book sale will be available in the lobby for the remainder of April (free) for the community to take. If any remain, they will be disposed of by May 1. Book Sale Dates & Times
How can I listen to my favorite tunes?
While we bid farewell to physical CDs within our library walls, fear not! Through the Upper Hudson Library System (UHLS) delivery service, you can still access physical CDs from other libraries in the region.
Visit www.hoopladigital.com/browse/music today to explore our revamped digital music catalog and discover a world of melodies waiting to be heard. Want to learn more about hoopla? Check out our hoopla TechTips post. Need help accessing hoopla? Stop in at the library for assistance!
What if I already have a CD checked out on my account?
If it’s owned by the East Greenbush Community Library, it will be removed from your account and you’re welcome to keep the CD. However, if it belongs to another UHLS Library, please ensure its return by the due date. Thank you for your cooperation! If you have questions about your account, please give us a call!
Facilities Update: February 20, 2024
Dear Valued Patrons,
Following our recent closure yesterday at 4 pm due to a plumbing issue resulting in sewer gas smells, we want to provide you with an update on the situation. After extensive efforts to identify the root cause, unfortunately, we were unable to pinpoint it. However, we took immediate action, including flushing the library drains and enlisting the expertise of a plumber to assess the situation. Despite our best efforts, the source of the issue remained elusive. Thankfully, the odors dissipated, allowing us to reopen the library today at 2 pm. As a follow-up and preventative measure, we will be scheduling a full flush clean out of all our drain lines to mitigate any potential future occurrences. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and greatly appreciate your understanding and patience.
Sincerely,
Jill Dugas Hughes
Library Director
Children’s Room Reopened
The Children’s Room reopened this week with refreshed carpet and an updated layout, and it looks great! Other than a few remaining punch-list items (including ceiling tiles), the Children’s Room carpet replacement project is now complete.
- Children’s Room New Carpet
- New Seating Area in the Children’s Room
- Children’s Room Light Table & Globe
Work on the roof replacement project has temporarily paused. The new rubber roof has been installed, and we are currently waiting on the delivery of metal materials needed to complete the finishing work.
Community Way was also patched this week as part of ongoing maintenance efforts. We are continuing to plan for a more substantial repaving project within the next two years.
Children’s Room & Playroom Closure
Interior renovations in the main part of the library are nearly complete, with new carpet installed and most collections available again.

We encourage families to stop by this weekend to stock up on children’s materials before the closure begins.
All other library spaces and services (except the patio area) remain open to the public. Roof work, along with additional interior carpet and painting work, will continue throughout the project.
Thank you for your patience and support as we continue improving the library.
Temporary Drive-thru Closures
The drive-thru will be temporarily closed between 6am-9am on Thursday, May 7 and Friday, May 8. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Interior Renovation Project Begins April 13
The Library will begin interior renovation work on Monday, April 13, as part of the ongoing repair project following water damage caused by the winter ice storm.
This phase of the project includes carpet replacement, along with related repairs and improvements in several areas of the building. Work will affect the Main Library, Teen Room, Hurr Room, Children’s Room, and office areas.
Although the carpet in the Children’s Room was salvageable, it had already been scheduled for replacement next year. - rotating closures of some areas
- reduced seating throughout the building
- noise, dust, and general disruption
- temporary interruption of some services, including computers, printing, and copying
Specific service impacts will vary as work moves through the building. We will post updates here regularly so visitors know what to expect.
